Bainbridge Community Foundation State of the Sector Report – Oct. 15, 2024 The League of Women Voters of Kitsap, Bainbridge unit hosted a presentation by Bainbridge Community Foundation. Jim Hopper, Executive Director, and Dana Binnendijk, Community Impact Officer, discussed the recently released State of the Sector 2023 Community Report. The report provides an overview of what this community offers, what opportunities await us, and what challenges we will work together to overcome.

Public Health Approaches to Addressing Homelessness – Oct 21, 2023. Adrienne Hampton, Kitsap Public Health Department Analyst, joined the Bremerton/Central Kitsap Unit to discuss the emerging role of the public health department in addressing homelessness in Kitsap County and the city of Bremerton.

Critical Area Ordinance Update for Kitsap County – September 26, 2023. A public education program with Kitsap County Planners Carla Lundgren and Colin Poff to learn some of the basics of the Comprehensive Plan revision process and Critical Area Ordinance establishment.

Bremerton School District: A Conversation with Superintendent Crawford and Assistant Superintendent Scott – Aug 21, 2023. The Bremerton/CK Unit of the LWV-Kitsap invited Dr. James Crawford, Bremerton School District’s new superintendent, to share his personal story and his vision for the district. Iva Scott, Assistant Superintendent (Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment) joined Dr. Crawford in sharing the vision for Bremerton School District moving forward.

2024 Bremerton Comprehensive Plan Update with Garrett Jackson – July 15, 2023. Garrett Jackson, Planning Manager for the city of Bremerton, joined the LWV-Kitsap Bremerton/CK Unit on Saturday, July 15, 2023, to discuss the City’s Comprehensive Plan Update.

Voices of Kitsap: Suquamish Tribal Chairman Leonard Forsman – June 16, 2023. Chairman Forsman discussed issues that are facing indigenous people and answered questions such as: how can we be better allies to the two tribes in our county? How does the Suquamish tribe interact with the county (police, development, etc.), the state, and the federal government? Since they are sovereign nations, how are these relationships affected? What are the current priorities of the Suquamish tribe to improve the lives of tribal members? What upcoming events and activities sponsored by the Suquamish can League members and the public participate in?

2024 Kitsap Comprehensive Plan with Eric Baker – May 10, 2023. Kitsap County Deputy Administrator Eric Baker joined the League of Women Voters of Kitsap to discuss the current phase in updating the 2024 County Comprehensive Plan.

Rule of Law & History of the Electoral College – April 27, 2023. League of Women Voters hosted a webinar featuring Chad Enright, Kitsap County Prosecutor, and Thomas Weaver, attorney and author in a discussion about the rule of law and the history of the Electoral College. These topics are important components of our recent election experiences, and the aftermath of those elections. The evening was a compelling discussion. Registration is not required.

Puget Sound Restoration Fund – April 26, 2023. Betsy Peabody gives an overview of the PSRF. She is a founder and Executive Director of the Puget Sound Restoration Fund. She served as President of the Pacific Shellfish Institute from 2007-2022, and on the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Ocean Acidification in 2012. In 2013, she collaborated with NOAA to establish the Kenneth K. Chew Center for Shellfish Research and Restoration, which PSRF operates to help restore native shellfish and other living marine resourse.

Affordable Housing For Those In The Middle – Mar 25, 2023. The League of Women Voters of Kitsap hosted a panel discussion addressing the question “How can we provide housing that is less expensive, uses green building techniques, and meets Kitsap development goals?” The following panelists presented their ideas. Kari Hunter Gives a Community Health Assessment – Feb. 17, 2023. League of Women Voters of Kitsap hosted a discussion with Jessica Guidry, the Kitsap Public Health District (KPHD) Equity Program Manager, about the KPHD activities in the last month. Kari Hunter, the KPHD Assessment & Epidemiology Program manager gave a preliminary report about the Community Health Assessment.

Housing Authorities in Kitsap – Jan 14, 2023. Kitsap County has two Housing Authorities: Bremerton Housing Authority (BHA) and Housing Kitsap (HK). Jill Stanton, BHA’s Executive Director, and Heather Blough, HK’s Executive Director, made a joint presentation to the Bremerton/CK Unit, part of the League of Women Voters Kitsap, to discuss the role of these Housing Authorities in Kitsap.

Public Hospital Districts Updates– Jan 13, 2023. A brief update about current issues and activities of the Public Health Department from Jessica Guidry; a video about Public Hospital Districts (PJHDs) from the Washington Association of PHDs; a PowerPoint presentation about special purpose districts and PHDs by Cynthia Stewart: and comments from Tricia Grantham, League member and current commissioner of Pullman PHD.

Kirsten gave an update on the Pacific Building Shelter project on Mile Hill Drive in Port Orchard as well as other information on housing and homelessness in Kitsap County. A Conversation with Kimberly Cizek Allen of the Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center (KIAC) – Sept 17, 2022. Kimberly Cizek Allen, Development & Marketing Director of Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center, was the guest speaker at the League of Women Voters Kitsap, Bremerton/CK Unit. She addressed the history of KIAC, explained the three primary services that KIAC provides immigrants (Family Services, Immigration Legal Services, Tax and Business Services), shared information about KIACs clients and KIACs Partners, and answered questions.

Introduction to Environmental Sustainability at Olympic College – April 16, 2022. Amy Lawrence, professor at Olympic College in Bremerton, joined the Kitsap League of Women Voters Bremerton/Central Kitsap Unit meeting to talk about environment sustainability at OC and in Kitsap County.

Climate Roundtable – April 13, 2022. Local leaders participated in a discussion of climate change in Kitsap County and what we are doing to address the immediate challenges. Panelists included: County Commissioner Rob Gelder, Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson, Bainbridge Island Mayor Joe Deets, Bremerton Mayor Greg Wheeler and Suquamish Tribe chairman Leonard Forsman.

Introduction to Kitsap Mental Health with Monica Bernhard – Mar 19, 2022. Bremerton/CK Unit invited Monica Bernhard, Chief Operating Officer, Kitsap Mental Health Services, to give an introduction to Kitsap Mental Health. This presentation is part of an effort by the unit members to better understand how services in Kitsap County work and their relationship to county governance and the wellbeing of our citizens.

Climate Change Outlook for the 2022 Legislative Session with Marty Gibbons – January 10, 2022. Marty Gibbons (Natural Resources & Transportation Lobby Team) talked to the Climate Solutions Committee about the climate change outlook in the 2022 Legislative session and how you can participate.

Brown Bag Discussion on Growth in Kitsap County – December 15, 2021. The League of Women Voters of Kitsap hosted a Brown Bag Discussion/Meet and Greet with elected officials to discuss growth in Kitsap County. Guests were Kitsap County Commissioners Ed Wolf, Robert Gelder, Charlotte Garrido; Port of Bremerton Commissioner Cary Bozeman; and Port of Kingston Commissioners Steve Heacock, Mary McClure, and Laura Gronnvoll.

Climate Policy – Ted Freeman – December 13, 2021. The Climate Solutions Committee hosted physicist and lead software engineer, Dr. Ted Larson Freeman, a leader in the Bainbridge Island chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby. He discussed several important issues: the Clean Energy Standard, the (demise of) the Clean Energy Payment Plan, the Carbon Tax, the Carbon Cash-Back, and the Carbon Fee and Dividend. What do they have in common, and how are they different? How will they affect low-income Americans? How effective would any of these programs be in reducing greenhouse gas emissions? In this talk, Ted Freeman talked about each of these policies and offered the latest perspectives gleaned from lobbying meetings with our members of Congress.

Peninsula Community Health Services (PCHS) – November 12, 2021. Learn all about the Peninsula Community Health Services from Regina Bonnevie Rogers, the chief medical officer.

The Future of Energy in Washington – October 2021. Dr. James Conca, Ph.D., met with the Climate Solutions Committee to discuss safe nuclear energy generation, energy that will be needed for us in Washington State as well as for countries around the globe. His presentation was riveting, packed with interesting facts including comparisons between fossil fuels, wind, hydro, solar and nuclear energy.

End of Life Washington: A Conversation with Rachel Haxtema – August 2021. This discussion was with the Health Care Committee.

Voter Services Training with Kitsap Auditor Paul Andrews – July 2021. Paul Andrews talked to our Voter Services Committee about election security and misinformation.

Proposed Impact Fees – July 2021. Guest speakers from Kitsap County Public Works discussed the proposed impact fees for new developments ordinance. Guests included Joe Rutan, County Engineer, and Jeff Shea, Traffic Engineer.

2021 Keynote Address to LWVK by State Supreme Court Justice Montoya-Lewis – May 2021. Justice Montoya-Lewis discussed her journey to the Washington State Supreme Court and what state courts can learn from tribal courts.

Plastic: The Big Picture, Local Insights, and What You Can Do – April 2021. Dr. Heather Trim, from Zero-Waste Washington, discussed a big-picture overview of plastic issues in our country and state. Kingston residents Hans and Nicholas Schippers, from Parley for the Oceans, addressed our local challenges and their efforts to educate future generations about how to take action. And, finally, Lori Cloutier, founder of Poulsbo Rotary’s “Trash Talk Task Force” talked about how we can effectively recycle when we must.

Speak Up School – April 2021. LWV of Kitsap sponsored Speak Up School to empower citizens to feel comfortable and improve skills for Speaking Up at the WA Redistricting Commission’s public meetings and/or public hearings.

Climate Change and Your Health: Plan Now! March 2021. To help us address the public health consequences of climate change, the LWV of Kitsap hosted this webinar. Dr. Kristie L. Ebi shared her research on the public health impact of global warming, and Lauren Jenks outlined the steps Washington State’s DOH is taking to address this looming crisis.

How Redistricting Works in Kitsap County: A Conversation with Kitsap County Auditor Paul Andrews – February 2021. Paul Andrews, Kitsap County Auditor, discusses how redistricting will be conducted in Kitsap County. Alison McCaffree from “Politics of the Possible in Action” joins in the conversation.

Deconstruct Barriers for Full Participation of Diverse Communities – January 2021. A webinar with representatives from the Voices of Pacific Island Nations, the Filipino American community, and Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community. Our guests spoke about what brought them to their current communities, the barriers that keep them from fully participating in our country and/or county, and what has helped them overcome some of these barriers to be included in their current community.  Read about the speakers here.

Kitsap Legislator Meet & Greet – December 2020. Our local legislators were invited to attend our annual LWVK Meet & Greet (this year on Zoom). The focus of discussion was priorities in the 2021 budget given the challenges of COVID. Legislators in attendance: Sen. Emily Randall, Sen. Christine Rolfes, Representative-elect Tara Simmons, and Rep. Jesse Young.

Desegregating White Privilege – November 2020. This Zoom webinar explored issues related to White Privilege in our community. Featuring Dr. Jevin West, assistant professor in the University of Washington iSchool and director of the Center for an Informed Public, and David Nelson, Kitsap Sun editor.
